The sky was overcast, but there was no rain. Several days of rain prior had left the trails wet and muddy. In all, there were 10 Jeeps that participated including several that had learned of the event from various forums. Chuck Thomas lost the coin toss and thus had to be trail leader. Ray Luisa was the tail gunner.
We first rode trail 22 which was in heavy use that day. There were delays waiting on a group of Nissan Exterras having more than their share of problems on the trail's obstacles. And, one of the Jeeps in our group lost his driver side rear wheel (loose lug nuts). By the time we finished 22 it was lunch time. Then came trail 3 which we pretty well had to ourselves. It was near the end of the trail where it gets gnarly that Chuck lost his brakes. We pinched the flexible line (passenger side front) with vice grips and topped off the fluid reservoir. After this trail Chuck headed for home while he had brakes on 3 wheels anyway. It turned out that the leak occurred when the banjo bolt loosened up at the brake line fitting. A few turns with a wrench and all was well again. Go figure!
